Do you remember all of those adverts in the early 2000s: Mac vs PC? The cool and youthful Mac would poke fun at the dowdy, slightly portly and not-at-all athletic PC character. And then there are the endless videos and blog posts about choosing between a Mac and PC: the ‘cult of Mac’, the ‘reality distortion field’, the list goes on. I’m here to tell you that the dichotomy between Apple and Microsoft is eroding our power over computing, our enjoyment and, above all, our ability to shape the tech’ future we want. It’s time, my friends, to embrace Linux as your main operating system.
I’m not a tech’ specialist: I’m a historian who does a lot of admin’. I don’t (nor have ever owned) a discrete GPU. I don’t want to tinker or fiddle with my computer. I’m an everyday computer user. I want it to work. This post is to tell you that over the last year or so, I have learned tech’s open secret: Windows and MacOS don’t need to exist.
