I think this is fair criticism of the piece, Greg. I think the article began as one thing and ended as something quite different. May I ask: What would it take for Linux to become a 'desirable' OS for you?
On the incentive issue: I don't think being backed by a large corporation which respond to market forces is the only way to drive improvement. Indeed, the recent 'enshittification' process suggests that, at some point, the opposite may be true.
The other point on markets/companies driving change is that is suggests that markets/companies have full knowledge of the the user base and can pivot accordingly. They don't and can't. A small community-based model may not be as well-equipped by way of resources, but they can be more responsive to a smaller, defined, number of issues due to their knowledge of the user base.
None of this is to undermine any of our criticism or thoughts, Greg, which I appreciate very much.
