Who’s your favorite historical figure and why?

I honestly don’t have one. Most of the people I write about left few written records, were the subject of no portraits or treatises: they existed through upheaval and leave little impression in the archive.

Can you judge the past with today’s lens?

There is no escaping the condescension of the present. We all go on journeys with baggage and historians are no different when they venture into the past. However, similar to frequent fliers, the more historians travel the more aware they become of their own cultural baggage and can try to mitigate its impact.
